BI Policy Hampers Property Sector Growth

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Eddy Hussi, chairman of the Real Estate Indonesia Association (REI), said that property sector growth in the first semester of 2014 had slowed down to by 10 to 15 percent compared to the same period last year.

He said that high Loan to Value (LTV) interest rate determined by Bank Indonesia (BI) is one of the causes of the weakening property sales. Unstable rupiah exchange rate and presidential election contributed to the slowdown.

"Demands are few so there's little development, but no project has been stopped." said Eddy.

With the end of presidential election, Eddy predicted that the property sector will continue to growth in the second semester. However, he is still witing for the new government's policy before determining growth target.

We are thankful that the presidential election ran  smoothly, but we will still see the next government's policy," he said.

BI Distributes Rp11 trillion New Banknotes

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) deputy governor Roland Waas said the central bank has distibuted some Rp11 trillion of new banknotes in the first week of Ramadhan. BI estimated the public would require about Rp118.5 trillion in cash during the Eid holiday season.

Was said 92 percent of the banknotes comprises of bills worth higher then Rp20,000. The remaining eight percent, he said, are small changes of Rp10,000 and lower.

BI previously said there is a 14.9-percent growth in cash needs for this year's Eid season. In 2013, the people needed Rp103.2 trillion in cash during the Eid holidays. This year, the central bank projected a total need of Rp118.5 trillion.
